Feb. 19, 2010 - PRLog -- The Prescott Strings Classical Chamber Orchestra is pleased to announce its Winter Concert performance which promises to be not only diverse in its musical selection, but entirely stimulating and entertaining as well.

“I always try to select works by not only the most prominent, well-known composers, but also those of whom many may not be acquainted, and whose works offer beautiful and varied styles.” stated Dr. Phil Kuhns, Conductor of the Strings.

The 24-piece Prescott Strings Classical Chamber Orchestra boasts not only seasoned musicians who play with the Prescott POPS Symphony and other musical groups in the community, but gifted local student musicians as well. This will be the second concert to be performed back in their home venue at the acoustically wonderful St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.

Saturday evening’s concert will feature another diverse program of engaging music by four of the world’s most masterful composers: Rutter, Bach, Handel and Edgar.

Best known for his incredibly popular Christmas carols and the magisterial Requiem, John Rutter has also written a few impressive orchestral works. The Prescott Strings will be performing the beautiful Suite for Strings written in 1973, and considered to be one of his finest. Based on a number of well-known English folk songs, Suite has four movements, each offering sounds that tell a story and are sure to be enjoyed.

Evidencing his typically innovative, and complex compositional style, Johann Sebastian Bach's Concerto for Two Violins is perhaps one of his most famous works. Featuring violin soloists Tiffany Weiss and Sarah deLaveaga, the Prescott Strings will perform this piece considered to be among the best examples of the work from the late Baroque period.

Flute soloist Beverly Chesterby and violin soloist George Friedman are sure to delight the audience as the Prescott Strings performs George Fredrich Handel's Concerto Grosso.
Another of the 18th century Baroque period's finest composers, Handel is best known for his most famous work, the oratorio Messiah. The Concerto Grosso is said to reflect Handel's abundant subtleties and the highest levels of inspiration, all of which are fully worthy of Handel's genius and guaranteed to excite listeners.

To round out the evening, the Prescott Strings will play Sir Edward Elgar's Introduction & Allegro for Strings (Quartet and Orchestra) which he composed in 1905 to show off the strings players' virtuosity. This score, described as a multi-layered symphonic poem for string orchestra, will feature the Strings Orchestra, plus a quartet featuring George Friedman and Abby Mize on violin, Dianne Holmgren on viola and Diana Hart on cello.

“We are looking forward to playing these wonderful works, and are proud to have our very talented soloists on hand for this concert as well.” added Dr. Kuhns.

St. Luke’s Episcopal Church is located at 2000 Shepherd’s Lane, just off Ruger Road and Hwy 89 in Prescott. Admission is free, although donations are always appreciated. The Prescott Strings Classical Chamber Orchestra is a 501c(3) organization and in addition to musical entertainment, provides musical scholarship assistance to gifted youth in the community.
