February 19, 2010 – Austin, Texas - The Austin Parks Foundation is pleased to announce the opening of volunteer registration for It's My Park Day, presented by Wheatsville Food Co-op, March 6, 2010. The foundation hopes to recruit 3,000 volunteers to help out at 60 different parks. Projects, each led by a volunteer site organizer, include painting, mulching, planting, hauling, shoveling and more at parks throughout Austin. In 2009, 2,500 volunteers contributed over 8,750 hours in a single day at 60 different projects, including tree planting, trail construction, retaining wall work, playground equipment installation and many other projects.
According to Executive Director Charlie McCabe, “What’s really amazing about this event is that it is all volunteer driven. Every year, we see more and more volunteers stepping forward to take leadership roles and adopt parks.”
The foundation lists three major goals for the event: building community; mentoring new leaders; and getting work done. “We try to encourage projects that go beyond basic trash pick ups to leave a lasting impact on the parks,” says Outreach Director Rosie Weaver.
