To most of us out here, Netbook seemed a term we are not too inclined with as we found that Netbooks are also known as ultra portables or mini notebooks. Netbooks, a branch of subnotebooks are a fast evolving category of light weight, small and economical laptop computers most suited for accessing web-based applications and general computing. Commercially, they are more commonly marketed as ‘companion devices’, a term that corroborates a user's other computer access.
When Netbooks found their way into the market during late 2007, they featured as much smaller notebooks that were optimised for low cost and low weight deprived of key features including the optical drive, keyboards and smaller screens with specification and computing level of power. Netbooks today, come in a wide range of sizes from below 5" screen diagonal to above 10.1" and weigh around 1kg (2 to 3 pounds).
Netbooks are less economical than other laptops and the year 2009 saw some wireless data carriers started to provide users ‘free of charge’ that also come with prolonged service contract purchases. A recent survey in June 2009 indicates that that 60% of netbook users never carry their netbooks out of the house; the reason why Software Giant including Microsoft has widened the availability of Windows XP for ultra-low cost PCs from June 2008 to June 2010.
Google's upcoming Chrome OS is much hyped to be loaded on particular netbooks with some even speculating that Google will unveil a Google-branded netbook that could run on the Chrome OS. Netbooks have also been shown running other OS including the likes of OpenBSD, FreeBSD, Darwin and Moblin.
