The United Telegraph reported that three quarters of the people recently surveyed believe that airlines should have a ‘fat tax, for passengers who are overweight. However, the same group of people disapproved of forcing overweight customers to buy a second seat.
Obese travelers are offered 25% discount off their second seat by the Air France policy. Yet, new legislation next month will entitle those customers a full refund if the flight is not fully booked.
Air France was ordered by the court in 2008 to pay $10,000 in damages to a 27 stone passenger who waist was measured at check-in, before being instructed to purchase two seats.
Not everybody agrees with Skyscanner co-founder and director, Barry Smith, who said, “On one hand, it’s not unreasonable for airlines to charge passengers extra if they occupy more than one seat. On the other, many would argue that it should be the responsibility of airlines to adjust their standard seat size, enabling them to comfortably accommodate all passengers.”
The Pacific island nation of Nauru is grouped as the world’s fattest nation, with 94.5% of its population overweight. Nearly 64% of all Britains are categorized as being overweight.
Airlines are facing difficulties on another front also. An Australian businessman is suing British Airlines over a very ‘humiliating’
Mirko Fischer believes that all males are put into the category of being seen as potential sex offenders and publicly shamed because of the airlines policy.
It is the duty of an airline’s crew to patrol the aisles of the aeroplane before take off, to ensure that no males are sitting next to young passengers who are travelling on their own, or separated from their parents.
Offending persons are requested to move and told that the aircraft will not take off until the request has been complied with.
Mirko Fischer, 33 year old hedge fund manager, was sitting in the centre seat between his pregnant wife and a 12 year old boy. A male steward asked Fischer to exchange seats with his wife.
Fischer refused, at which time the steward raised his voice, catching the attention of the neighbouring passengers.
Fischer finally moved, because he was so humiliated by the incident. He is now suing British Airways in the Slough County Court, on the grounds of sexual discrimination.
Fischer states “This policy is branding all men as perverts for no reason”.
