The Center for Metal Arts in downstate New York will host another hands-on workshop intensive with sculptor Frederic Crist to explore basic skills, process and tools that bring the forge into the sculptural process. Participants will explore the processes and vocabulary of forging iron, and go on to create individual pieces. Participants will also investigate the many different assembly processes, including wedging, riveting, and mortise and tenon that are available at the forge. Crist will explore the use of mass and line in developing ideas and direction in sculpture.
Sculptor and innovative metal artisan Frederic Crist was introduced to forging as a direct manipulation of metal under Jack Andrews at the Philadelphia College of Art, where he graduated with a BA in Sculpture. He became Head Blacksmith at the Samuel Yellin Metalworkers, legendary for its fine crafted architectural works, before opening his own sculpture studio in Waynesboro, VA. Crist’s classes always amp up the imagination and may even radically inspire your sculpture work. No prior forging experience is required for this class.
“Fire, Forge and Hot Iron for Sculptors” will be held in the fully equipped metal arts teaching studio of The Center for Metal Arts, The workshop intensive is $340 plus materials. A deposit of $175 will hold a seat in this small hands-on class.
