Shortly after the devastating earthquake in Haiti, Paola and Jeff Huenefeld, parents of the Michael-Ann Russell JCC’s preschooler, Lucas, made a proposal to the Early Childhood Director, Guila Mermelszteyn, to mobilize a collection from the parent/student body of canned foods, diapers, baby formula, clothing, etc. The Early Childhood families responded immediately and generously. Within 48 hours, a truck was at the preschool facility picking up the items, with preschoolers and staff helping to load, and was then driven to a local airport. Jeff Huenefeld, a pilot, delivered the collection to Haiti, where it was distributed to the victims of this terrible tragedy within 24 hours.
“It was incredibly heartwarming to see the response we got from our preschoolers, families, and staff” mentioned Guila. “It just goes to show that generosity and kindness knows no age,” she continued. Shirley Jacobs, MAR-JCC Early Childhood Development Coordinator added, “When it comes down to it, we’re all just people, we’re all the same and what matters most is that we help one another especially in times of difficulty and tragedy. Here at the JCC, we teach our children the importance of humanity and brotherhood”
