Feb. 15, 2010 - PRLog -- Fighting hunger takes a new path during the March 27th Great Human Race in and around Durham. A local non-profit plans to pound the pavement with supporters from all walks of life, raising funds for their local fight against hunger.

"The Great Human Race gives us an opportunity to hold our own 5K inside their race," explains Kay Whatley, Creative Director with Grow And Share. "Grow And Share has joined the race, formed a team, and is encouraging our volunteers to participate in this walk to draw attention to local hunger issues."

Non-profits do good works in their communities and require funding for the materials, projects, and personnel to support various projects.  Great Human Race offers non-profit organizations a first-quarter funding opportunity to raising funds without incurring usual costs.

According to Tammy Dorfman, organizer of the Great Human Race, "The Great Human Race 5k, hosted by the Volunteer Center of Durham, is celebrating it's 15th anniversary.  We are so excited to have the opportunity to offer this event to the nonprofit community each year. During the last 14 years, more than $1 million has been raised by hundreds of nonprofit groups.  Last year, a record $200,000 was raised by the nonprofit community and this year is shaping up to be another record breaking year.  The Great Human Race is also simply a fun day for nonprofit agencies and their supporters.  The entertainment this year will be fun for everyone - live music, food and an inflatable playground for the kid in everyone will be available.  We hope everyone comes out to enjoy the morning's activities!"

Grow And Share’s team organizers are focused on two race goals — raising $14,000 for expanding the organization’s educational materials and on-the-ground planting and distribution services, and engaging at least fifty walkers for their team.  Grow And Share expects community champions will stand together on race day, supporting each other’s causes.

Grow And Share's concept is simple. Grow And Share helps communities grow gardens, facilitating plant giveaways to willing gardeners, who then harvest fresh food to share in their communities. This April, Grow And Share will be giving away well over 10,000 seedlings to local gardeners.  While all plants are free, gardeners must sign a pledge to share their harvest within their communities. Their gardens produce thousands of pounds of produce every year.
