FinSoul: Suggestion by G20 nations for majority voting in the UN may revive climate treaty.

A new global pact to fight climate change may be more easily achievable after Group of 20 suggestion say analysts.

Feb. 15, 2010 - PRLog -- FinSoul sources indicate that the UN Climate Change Secretariat has appealed to all countries to submit views by mid-February on how many meetings will be needed in the course of this year in order to build the necessary momentum to achieve a binding global treaty to fight climate change at the next ministerial talks to be held in Mexico City from November 29 to December 10.

In the wake of the failed Copenhagen Summit last year, nations are unclear on what the next steps should be and the 2010 calendar is almost bare, with the only other planned UN meeting ahead of Mexico to commence in Bonn in late may.

"So far there hasn't yet been the engagement of a smaller group of countries to lead the way," FinSoul understands the director of the World Resources Institute's climate and energy program said.

Meanwhile analysts say that the G20 which is due to hold summits in June and November may be able to boost efforts by focusing more on climate change and strong calls for the relaxation of unanimity on major UN decisions which could ease work on a new deal.

"We need to work on the UN process -- item one is to allow for majority decisions," FinSoul believes the head of the Stockholm Resilience Centre at Stockholm University was quoted as saying.

It is widely agreed that the 194 nation ministerial UN talks are cumbersome making smaller meetings ahead of the main talks desirable. The Copenhagen Summit showed that developing nations, many of whom are most at risk from the effects of climate change, felt marginalised.
