Feb. 15, 2010 - PRLog -- In this hi-tech world, SMS or Short Message Service has become the driving force. It is driving the world with all its power. Whether it’s a business meeting, or a friendly wish, or any important communication, SMS has an answer to all.

Short Message Service (SMS) is a mobile data service that allows delivery of short messages over mobile networks and other equipments like voice mail systems. It is one of the most progressive and effective way of transmitting message to and from mobile phones irrespective of the network and the area supporting the mobile connection.

Originally, SMS was introduced in the GSM mobile phones but now the feature is supported in all the cell phones. It has made the world around more reachable, more convenient, and more comfortable. It is believed that the first SMS was sent in the United Kingdom from a personal computer to a mobile phone on the Vodafone GSM network in December 1992. Since then, the number of messages transmitting through various mobile networks has increased tremendously to about 100 billion messages every month.

SMS is driving the world and an interesting technology is driving this service. According to the technology short messages are sent to the main message service centre of specific mobile phone network.  From there the messages are sent to the receiver mobile phones. If in case the receiver phone is not reachable or switched off, then the sender of the message receives a pending message report and as soon as the message is received the message centre sends a delivery report as a confirmation receipt of the message received by the receiver. The short message service centre serves as a gateway of mobile network’s point of contact with other existing mobile networks.

SMS has multitude of applications and functions that has made life more comfortable and every task more convenient. It can transmit weather conditions, can deliver sports updates, give stock quotes, notify employees of sale enquiries, and variety of other tasks. All these information are keyword oriented as the mobile user has to send a request to the mobile network in order to receive these types of information. Today, many e mail service providers also offer variety of benefits and e mail services over the SMS which has further made the job of working professionals and business men easier and more comfortable. There are also ways to track down bank account details, prepaid connection balance enquiry, and premium due date of any specific insurance policy.
