"Austin" is a postcard history of Austin from the 1890's to 1940's as told through collectible postcards. Postcards are the third most collected items in the United States behind stamps and money. Arcadia Publishing specializes in postcard and photographic history books.
The approximately carefully selected 240 postcards included in the book offer up a unique view of Austin -- a pictorial history of the city as shown through samplings of Don Martin's personal postcard collection. Chapters cover the Capitol, UT, downtown, churches, old motels, businesses around town and the Colorado River, among others. But more than a viewing of known landmarks, the book is also a history lesson, revealing scenes that existed sometimes for only a limited time.
The book's author is Don Martin of Austin, President of Don Martin Public Affairs.
