Can Reality Shows Help You Get Noticed?

Can appearing on a TV reality show really make you famous – or just notorious? This article examines whether there are any short-cuts to getting scouted.

Feb. 13, 2010 - PRLog -- The popularity of reality television is something that continues to grow, even with the recent announcement that 2010 will be ‘Big Brother’s final year on Channel 4.
Shows such as ‘America’s Next Top Model’ and ‘Make Me a Supermodel’ remain ratings-grabbers. The promise of becoming a successful model (http://www.modelsconnect.net/Become-a-model/fashion-modelling.html) seemingly overnight is a draw few are capable of resisting. Apart from being must-see TV, do these shows hold any real potential in terms of getting you noticed?
At first take, it seems like a good bet. Exposure on a nationally-broadcast show can only be of benefit to someone’s career. Any publicity is good publicity, right?
While there are definitely winners in the reality show format, the pitfalls can be extreme. It begs the question of whether the risk is worth taking in the first place.
There is always a chance that you will be spotted and picked up by an agency (http://www.modelsconnect.net/modelling_agencies/how_to_contact_agency.html) while appearing on a show, but the flip side is rather different. You are at the mercy of the show’s production team. On-screen, you can control your own responses to situations, but after the cameras stop rolling, anything can happen in the editing suite.
It is important to realise before making any commitment, that the programme-makers’ first and only loyalty is to their network. Their remit is to make good television. To make a programme watchable, viewers need a hook to compel them to keep watching.
Reality shows, as a whole, thrive on characters and conflict. It is true to say that many of these schedule-fillers are more tightly scripted than most costume dramas. If you still want to audition for a reality show, just remember that there is nothing ‘real’ about reality television. Everything you see on-screen has been engineered and edited in post-production to ensure that viewers will keep watching, and that the show will go on.
With the demise of Channel 4’s ground-breaking ‘Big Brother’, there is now room for another blockbuster reality hit, but if you are tempted to put yourself forward for a dose of 15-minute fame, just bear in mind that it is harder to shift a bad reputation than build a great one from scratch.
When it comes to making it in modelling (http://www.modelsconnect.net/modelling_agencies/safe_mode...), maybe adopting the old-fashioned approach is the best way to ensure that if you do become a ‘name’, you do so on your own terms. Control is very easy to give up, but much harder to take back.
