Laws governing ownership of Savannah cats in the United States vary according to state. The majority of states follow the code set by the United States Department of Agriculture which defines wild/domesticated hybrid crosses as domesticated. Some states have set more restrictive laws on hybrid cat ownership in Iowa, Hawaii, Massachusetts, and Georgia. Some cities may invoke laws that differ from the state. For example, Savannahs more than five generations from the Serval are allowed to be owned in New York state, but not in the city of New York.
NEW YORK: New York state 'owns' all wildlife, including hybrids of cats who are not five generations removed from it's wild ancestor and not registered with TICA, AFC or CFA, and who are not 'legally acquired and held in private ownership.
MASSACHUSETTS:
GEORGIA: Wild animal means any animal which is not wildlife and is not normally a domestic species in this state. For more information visit
