Feb. 12, 2010 - PRLog -- OKLAHOMA CITY – Educator Dana Orwig has officially announced her candidacy as a Democrat for the Oklahoma State House of Representatives. Orwig is seeking the District 87 seat, which includes much of near northwest Oklahoma City.  The seat is currently held by Republican Jason Nelson.

Orwig is an ordained deacon in the Episcopal Church and is an assistant chaplain for St. John’s Episcopal School. She is the Christian Education Director for St. John’s Episcopal Church, where she also directs the Bell and Children’s Choirs.  Dana and her husband Steve have lived in Oklahoma City for more than 30 years and have two adult daughters, two sons-in-law and two grandchildren.

“I am excited to announce that I am again running for the District 87 House seat,” Orwig said. “There are many critical issues facing our community and our state, from education and healthcare, to personal liberty rights and the corrupting influence of corporations and special interest groups on our elected representatives.”

Orwig ran for the seat in 2006 and 2008, with narrow losses in both races.  In the 2008 contest against Nelson, the election was decided by 187 votes. “Now, more than ever, the people of Oklahoma and my district deserve a representative that they can trust to tackle the important issues, rather than pushing a personal or ideological agenda.”

The Orwig campaign will officially kick off with a “Tea Party” on George Washington’s Birthday, Monday, February 22. Tea, assorted beverages, and a variety of foods will be available to attendees of the event.

“By hosting the event on Washington’s birthday, we hope to emphasize not only the importance of individual liberties, but also the great achievements that our Founding Fathers fought for, and the progress that can be made when we pull together as a community,” Orwig said. “This nation and the State of Oklahoma were not built by conservatives or liberals, but by great men and women who, despite differing politics, knew that they had to work together to accomplish their goals. This is the spirit we need to return to the state capitol.”

The Orwig Tea Party campaign kick-off is open to the general public and will be at the campaign’s headquarters at 2924 N.W. 23rd Street from 4-7 pm. The offices are located on the south side of N.W. 23rd, across from Taft Junior High.
