Suffolk Independent Living Advice Roadshows

This spring Suffolk Independent Living (SIL) is taking to the road with their advice roadshows which will travel across Suffolk.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Feb 15, 2010 -
The roadshows will see SIL advisors visiting local communities to bring their knowledge and expertise to the public at large.
The free drop-in sessions will provide advice and support for those receiving care or support from Suffolk County Council with a view to helping them take more control in their lives through the Direct Payment scheme.
Direct Payments are a way for individuals to control their care and support by receiving cash payments instead of a direct service from the County Council. This allows them to decide who they employee, how many people they employee and when they want and need care or support. Direct Payments can be used for a wide range of services as well as activities or equipment.

The roadshows will be stopping at the following venues in the coming months:

Felixstowe Library on Tuesday 23rd February between 1.30pm & 3.30pm
Crescent Road, Felixstowe, Suffolk, IP11 7BY

Long Melford Library on Tuesday 16th March between 2.00pm & 4.00pm
Long Melford, Sudbury, Suffolk, CO10 9JT

Oulton Broad Library on Tuesday 20th April between 2.00pm & 4.00pm
92 Bridge Road, Lowestoft, Suffolk, NR32 3LR

For a full schedule of Suffolk Independent Living roadshow dates and further information please visit http://www.ncodp.org.uk/sil-roadshows/ or call 01473 603876.

Lee Evans, Manager of Suffolk Independent Living (SIL), appeared on BBC Radio Suffolk’s James Hazell show on Wednesday 17th of February to discuss the roadshows and the wide range of work SIL is involved in supporting the people of Suffolk. The show is available online via the BBC’s listen again feature at http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p001d7yd, for 7 days following the broadcast.

Suffolk Independent Living provides Advice and Support to people considering or using Direct Payments in Suffolk.
Suffolk Independent Living is funded by Suffolk County Council and managed by the Norfolk Coalition of Disabled People (NCODP).

The Norfolk Coalition of Disabled People (NCODP) is a human-rights group controlled by disabled people and their organisations. They organise and take part in campaigns and run services that promote social equality and dignity for all disabled people.

The NCODP regards having an impairment as a normal part of being human. Disability results from people with impairments being excluded by physical and social barriers and negative attitudes. Their main task is to challenge the many forms of discrimination created by these barriers and attitudes.

The NCODP believes that disabled people must take the leading role in decisions that affect their lives both locally and as part of the national and international disability movements in which the NCODP plays an active part. There must be “Nothing about us without us.”
