Before the freeways were paved and the landmarks of Los Angeles were built, the Portola expedition arrived to modern Elysian Park in 1769. The diarist with the group wrote, “After traveling about a league and a half through a pass between low hills we entered a very spacious valley, well grown with cottonwoods and alders, among which ran a beautiful river from north-northwest, and then, doubling the point of a steep hill, it went on afterward to the south.” On Saturday, February 13, 2010, Crespi of Encino will honor the memory and contributions of the author of the diary, Father Juan Crespi.
Father Crespi was a Franciscan Friar and he wrote the journals about the Spanish Expeditions of early California. A Night of Crespi Memories will illustrate the life of Father Crespi. California State Archeologist Scott Green will be one of the keynote speakers. Green offers a perspective on the life and legacy of Fr. Juan Crespi, Spanish missionary and explorer, and the unique parallels between his life and Crespi Carmelite High School’s guiding philosophy of the “Crespi Man”. Scott is an alumnus of the school and he will be joined by one of his former teachers Mr. John King. King is the longest tenured instructor on campus with forty years of experience at the school. This special event will begin at 7:00 PM in the Crespi Commons.
