Choke the Fire, DSPA Dry Sprinkler Powder Aerosol
Fire Fighters from Richland Hills,Texas were wildly surprised on the afternoon of February 5,2010.
En route to their destination, they were informed that flames were shooting out of a rear window of the single story residence. The first unit on the scene reported heavy smoke billowing from the rear as neighbors reported breaking in the front door only to be assaulted by the smoke which stopped their efforts to aid in a search for possible residents trapped inside. Quick thinking on the part of the first responder led to the deployment of a brand new device obtained by the department for just such an occasion,The DSPA-5. The DSPA-5 ( sometimes referred to as the “Red Grenade” ) has the ability when deployed properly to drop temperatures in a fire 700° F in a few seconds and completely extinguish flames in a few minutes.
After the DSPA-5 was deployed, the Fire Fighters waited approximately 4-5 minutes before entering the 3 bedroom ranch to find only a few hot spots that required a minimal amount of water to completely extinguish. At this time, Automatic aid companies were able to perform a primary search for victims and luckily, found no one home at the time of the fire.
Chief William Bell of the Richland Hills Fire Department stated that DSPA had “saved this home from extensive water damage” and contained the fire to a single bedroom. Bell said “his Fire Fighters expected the heat levels to be much,much higher” and that they were amazed with the units performance. A neighboring force was also in attendance at this fire and explained that this fire was a duplicate of a fire they fought the previous week and when they overhauled the fire they were all standing in 3 inches of water. When asked his thoughts on the DSPA Chief Bell responded “ We plan on holding on to them for a long time”.
