KALAMAZOO — You could say Bilbo’s Pizza has been making pizza with your heart in mind since 1976.
That’s the year co-owner Charlie Konett decided to start making heart-shaped pizzas for Valentine’s Day. Konett said the two Bilbo’s locations sold around 400 heart-shaped pizzas last year alone. He thinks it’s popular because it gets to the spirit of the holiday, but is casual.
“People have a lot of fun with it. It’s something that can be appreciated, but it’s a light-hearted thing,” he said.
Konett said it’s popular for a low-key night in.
The pizzas are served in one size only (equivalent of a small) in pan style. It comes in a heart-shaped container and sells for $9.50 for plain cheese and goes up in price as you add more toppings.
Although Bilbo’s is the godfather of heart-shaped pizza, it’s not the only thump-thumping pie in town. The Papa John’s and Papa Murphy’s locations in Kalamazoo also sell the heart-shaped pizzas.
Eshah Wilder, the manager of the West Main Street Papa John’s, said the promotion, which runs now through Sunday, is $14.99 for a large, thin-crust, one-topping pizza and a cinnamon pie.
“Pepperoni looks the prettiest,” Eshah said of the best topping.
Eshah said the Valentine’s Day pizza, which can be delivered, resonates with a variety of customers.
“It’s actually really popular,” she said. “We get a lot of parents ordering for their children, or since we’re near campus, we get a lot of girls ordering for their boyfriends.”
Of course, if you’re proudly single, you can take great joy in cutting the heart down the middle.
