On February 27th 2010, Steve Lulek the owner of Green Mountain Rock Climbing Center in Rutland and the 17 members of the youth climbing team will do just that. Ranging in age from 7 to 16, they are known as “Green’s Extreme Team” and will be climbing the height of Everest… indoors. They will have 6 hours to climb 8,848 meters - which equals to approximately 1,162 climbs as a group and 75 climbs per child!
The Extreme Team is attacking this incredible feat in order to raise money to defray the cost of travel to competitions around the Northeast, entry fees, and USA climbing memberships. The children have been training intensely 2-3 times per week and are seeking pledges and sponsors to ensure that all can participate, since they have trained so hard for the past 5 months.
Regular weekly workouts include: climbing with weighted vests, thousands of sit-ups and push-ups, balance drills, hundreds of pull-ups, and thousands of climbs. To see videos of the Team in action go to http://www.vermontclimbing.ning.com and check out videos of Kenna, Mazie, and Sam!
The kids are pumped, ready to go, and would love your support. They are also looking for experienced climbers who would be willing to help with belaying, so they can focus on climbing Everest!
This unique event is first of its kind in the area. Steve Lulek is known for his training expertise, positive energy, and innovative ideas - including the creation of the first high school and junior high climbing leagues in the country.
