FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Feb 10, 2010 -
Visit  www.tigernet.nic.in and get first hand information on Tiger mortality rate in India.

Due to excessive poaching for traditional Chinese medicines and loss of habitats, the magnificent big cats of jungles i.e Tigers are on the threshold of extinction. Three subspecies of  Tiger such as the Javan, the Balinese, and the Caspian Tiger has already vanished in the 20th Century. Six subspecies remain; two of which are considered Critically Endangered by the IUCN Red List: the South China Tiger (panthera tigris amoyensis) and the Sumatran Tiger (panthera tigris sumatrae).

But, India has been counted among one of the few nations in world which is actively participating in Tiger conservation. Despite, all efforts in 2008, India has lost large number of Tigers. At present, our country has a Tiger population of 1, 411 only, which is very pathetic. So, to keep a check on the mortality rate of Tigers in India, the wildlife trade monitoring network TRAFFIC has tied up with the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA).

Jointly, they had developed a website known as www.tigernet.nic.in, which is a official directory for Tigers and other wildlife mortalities. This website will also provide information on Tiger related crimes and would allow wildlife wardens and field directors of Project Tiger Reserves to access key data on Tiger death and crime as well as seizures of tiger products.

According to TRAFFIC, a conservation organization of India, this newly launched website will enable
the environmentalists and nature lovers to have proper information on biodiversity of India. This website will aid them to have up-to-date information on wildlife criminals who attack Tigers very frequently to serve their various illegal purposes. Currently, the site is providing proper information on poaching of leopard in Jammu and Kashmir.

It is a user-friendly website which gives ample of opportunity to public to report wildlife crimes. According to TRAFFIC, “ the collection of streamlined information is the first step toward addressing the root cause of a misdeed and this website has to be seen in this context. It is hoped that it will engender a spirit of honesty and cooperation among all major stakeholders in Tiger conservation in the country for remedial action to save the majestic predator of the Indian jungles along with all the other denizens that cohabit with this species.”
