In downtown Washington 2,000 people gathered in Dupont Circle for a snowball fight of epic proportions, even as the snow continued to fall. All this was the result of messages posted on the social networks, Facebook and Twitter, besides word of mouth. The snow fight was streamed live to the Internet.

The major event of the area was snow clearing, with some districts being warned about ‘shovel-thieves’. However, Beach Drive, in Rock Creek Park, was converted into a makeshift cross-country ski run.

Washington, DC was brought to a standstill through the worst snow storm in the region’s history, when over two feet of snow fell. Businesses and over 200,000 homes lost power.
City officials warned people to stay indoors, while emergency crews worked to clear streets and restore power to the paralyzed area, as snowbound people huddled in their homes.

So much snow fell, without stopping, that even the snow plows became stuck and crews ran out of places to get rid of the piles of snow from roads they had to clear again and again. District transportation officers warned that huge drifts of snow at intersections would interfere with motorists' line of sight for days to come. The National Guards were called out to give a helping hand.

"It’s as much snow as any one of us have seen in our lifetime," Adrian M. Fenty, District Mayor said. Officials said they could not remember another blanket closure of the area like this one. Washington’s biggest snowfall was 28 inches in 1922.

Sgt. David Schlosser, a Park Police spokesman said "With the high winds and driving snow, you can't even see the top of the Washington Monument from the base".

The storm was called ‘Snowmageddon’ even before the first snowflake fell. More snowfalls have been predicted for the days ahead.

Other areas also affected are Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Baltimore. Three feet of snow fell in West Virginia.
