Feb. 9, 2010 - PRLog -- Dr. JoAnne Barge is a psychotherapist, who practices her services in Los Angeles, California. She is an out-of-the-box thinker. Her approach to treatment is based in science but expressed creatively. Many of today's current treatment models fail to take individual uniqueness into consideration. She takes an approach that is not about homogenizing all people to be the same but rather she encourages her patients to get in touch with their real selves and a fuller expression of life.

Dr. Barge is often asked, "How can you listen to people's problems all day long?" According to her "This is not at all what I do. I do not just listen to problems; I listen to people in their entirety. I hear so much more than their problems! I hear the songs in their hearts, their dreams, their sadness and losses but most of all I hear their answers, the way out, that light at the end of the tunnel. It is really a joy to be a part of the process of discovery and finding happiness and solutions."

In explaining how she came to be a psychologist Dr. Barge said, "I found the variation and complexities in people very interesting and people seemed comfortable in talking with me." Sometimes individuals struggle with addiction problems, relationship conflicts, co-dependency, or sexual compulsivity and other sexual matters. Through education, values identification and clarification, goal development, and the application of skills learned in therapy, she can assist her clients with the issues they currently face.

Her career began while working six years at Kaiser Permanente Medical Group as a Counselor and Therapist. Here, she discovered her passion for helping people. She also worked two years as Clinical Director at Charter Pacific Hospital (1983-85). Dr. Barge has been in Private practice doing consulting, counseling and psychotherapy since 1983.

She also has a great teaching history having been an Instructor at a number of local universities (1980-2004); University of California@Los Angeles, University of Southern California (USC) and Antioch University@LosAngeles.

Well respected in her field, Dr. Barge has specialized training in working with people struggling with or recovering from Alcohol and other Drug abuse, dependence and addiction. As a published writer, Dr. Barge wrote and published parenting tapes (2000) called Making the Character Connection. She currently co-writes a weekly psychology column for the Santa Monica Daily Press.

Psychotherapy is an art to Dr. Barge, "Psychology is a science but it includes a lot of philosophy and it's my opinion that psychotherapy is an art. No two people are the same." While human beings have a lot in common, each of us is unique and the "discovery and recovery" that comes with therapy can be miraculous.

Along with her specialization and certification in addictions, Dr. Barge is very familiar with family and relationship psychology. She had researched and taught on the subject of attachment and loss and helps her patients to see how it specifically affects their relationships.

Her qualifications and Licenses Certifications are impeccable: Licensed Psychologist (PSY 14116); Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (MT 18182); APA Certified in the Treatment of Substance Abuse - American Psychological Association; Certified in Clinical Hypnosis - UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute.

She earned her Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and a M.S. in Counseling Psychology, from the University of Southern California (USC).

She is affiliated with several professional associations. American Psychological Association - Full Member, Association for Psychological Science - Full Member, California Association of Marriage & Family Therapists - Full Clinical Member, and the Los Angeles Psychological Association - Full Member.

Dr. Barge uses her skills with genuine concern for her client's individual needs in a therapeutic setting. As a professional, she understands that people need to learn to believe in themselves again, regardless of how hopeless things appear at the time. Her greatest desire is that she will be able to help individuals in their time of need. She declares "I believe in people and I trust that there is something for anyone who is truly looking. Whatever type of work we do together, the joy of my work is in getting there!"
