Costa Rica: With a population that has been growing steadily during the last years (+1.3%), and a household size that has decreased to one of the lowest levels in the region (3.63), Costa Rica is one of the few Central American countries that has reached a high TV penetration recently. Today, around 96% of the 1.2 million households in the country own a TV set, up from 84% in 2000 according to the country’s national institute of statistics.
El Salvador: In 2008, the country had 6.122 million inhabitants and 1.381 million households, according to El Salvador’s General Department of Statistics. The household size has fluctuated around 4.2 during the last decade, and the proportion of households who own a TV set has grown from 74% in 2000 to 84% in 2008. According to Dataxis Intelligence, this rate is expected to reach 91% in 2015.
Nicaragua: The latest figures from the country’s national Institute of Information and Development show that TV penetration remains relatively low in Nicaragua. In 2005, only 60% of the 1.117 million Nicaraguan households had a TV set. Dataxis Intelligence estimates that this rate is currently close to 66%.
Guatemala: The country had a population of 12.987 million in 2006. With an estimated annual growth rate of 3.3%, the ‘land of Eternal Spring’ has now around 14 million inhabitants and 3 million households according to Dataxis Intelligence.
Honduras: The second most populated Central American country after Guatemala had 7.65 million inhabitants in 2007 according to Honduras’ National Institute of Statistics. With an estimated annual growth rate of 2%, the country’s population is expected to cross the 8 million mile mark in 2010 according to Dataxis Intelligence’
Central America’s surrounding islands tend to show a lower households size (especially Cuba, Dominican Republic, Bahamas and Jamaica). Nevertheless, their TV penetration rates remain somewhat heterogeneous. For instance, 89% of Cuba’s 3.754 million households had a TV set in 2008 according to the country’s national statistics office (ONE). Dominican Republic’s Household TV penetration rate was 81% in 2007 according to the republic’s statistical office (ONE). However, Jamaica for instance still has a relatively low TV penetration rate. In 2005, less than 60% of households had a TV set in Jamaica.
