For my next project I am strongly of the opinion that there is still much to do with the jaguar as my subject. I therefore intend to make a return to the Encontras das Aguas State Park where an increased duration of time will be dedicated to the seeking of more opportunities to encounter the region’s jaguars. My visit to the area will be during the month of September which is well advised because seasoned observers give the period between July and October as the most optimal for jaguar viewing.
The Pantanal has a jaguar population that is estimated to be between 4000 and 7000. The estimates also suggest that each 100km square of the region hosts between six and nine jaguars. Increased efforts are being directed towards the conservation of this creature currently endangered by the hunting activities of locals. The conservation efforts are based on the creation of a novel tourism enterprise whereby visitors to the Pantanal are given a tour of the area during which they are guaranteed to see as many of the elusive jaguars as possible.
