Cass Business School get on their Bikes for Haiti

Feb. 9, 2010 - PRLog -- Just before five o’clock on Tuesday 12 January this year a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck ten miles from the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince. The full extent of the devastation is only now becoming clear and the Red Cross has estimated that 200,000 people lost their lives and further three million have been left in desperate need of aid. Homes have been destroyed along with schools, hospitals and other buildings, and many children orphaned or separated from their families. Some of the serious problems faced by Haitians following the devastation include poor sanitation and disease due to exposed sewage pipes.

In order to raise money for Haiti Students had to come up with ideas that would involve everyone across the business school. ‘Hats for Haiti’ simply required everyone entering our Bunhill Row building to wear a hat of any kind and Cass Business School (http://www.cass.city.ac.uk) rose to the challenge donning everything from sombreros to trilbies. Meanwhile, outside the campus, students and staff, including Cass Dean Richard Gillingwater, undertook a 12 hour non-stop cycle on exercise bikes, kindly donated by Virgin Active.

The initiatives were inspired by Cass Business School MEMBA student and Haitian national Sendra Dorcé who appealed for help from her friends and was delighted by the response from the School: “I am truly humbled by the outpouring of support and the many people who have offered their good wishes for this cause. I encourage everyone to go out in your communities and inspire them to continue the giving and generosity.”
