Before deciding to pursue attempting to modify your loan, or deciding not to, it is recommended that you understand how modifying your loan could impact your credit. It is better to make an informed decision with all of the pertinent information than to make a decision of haste based upon rumors.

Hector Milla Editor of the "Best Loan Modification Companies" website -- http://www.BestLoanModificationCompanies.com  -- pointed out;

“…Loan modifications often impact the terms of repayment of the loan. In many cases the repayment term of the loan is greatly increased to provide the consumer with a lower monthly payment. This will not necessarily negatively impact a consumer's credit, though it will mean that the loan will appear on the consumer's credit report for a longer period of time and at a higher balance…”

This will generally increase the consumer's debt to income ratio for longer than it would had the loan been repaid according to the original terms. However, many loans are able to be repaid before the end of the loan period. Consumers should check with their lenders to see if there are any prepayment penalties associated with paying off the loan ahead of schedule.

“…It is important for consumers to check with their lenders about how modifying a loan would impact the terms of the loan before making any final decisions. In some cases modifying the loan allows for the consumer to be locked in to much more favorable terms than were previously agreed upon. However, in some cases that is not the situation at all. For these reasons it is important to read all fine print and consult a financial advisor before choosing whether or not to partake in a loan modification. It's not common, but sometimes loan modifications do negatively impact credit. A financial advisor can give the best advice on a consumer's specific situation…” H. Milla added.
