When Maryland attorney and mystery author Debbi Mack's first novel, IDENTITY CRISIS, went out of print only nine months after it was published in 2005, she refused to just let matters die. Now, through electronic and print-on-demand publishing, IDENTITY CRISIS is available again and recently won Best Mystery Novel in the Preditors & Editors Readers Poll for 2009.
Preditors & Editors is an online "guide to publishers and writing services." Every year, it runs the Readers Poll, in which readers vote on works submitted in various categories.
IDENTITY CRISIS is a "hardboiled"
Mack brought the book back into print through Lulu.com, a print-on-demand publisher that compensates its authors through royalties.
Exciting as it is to have the book in print again, her most impressive sales have come through e-publishing, primarily through Amazon. Since the book was released as an e-book on June 2, 2009, Mack has sold at least 2,400 downloads of IDENTITY CRISIS.
"E-books are easy to publish and sell at a low cost," Mack said. "Print-on-demand technology also makes it easier for authors with out-of-print books to bring them back on the market. It's a win-win scenario for authors and readers."
Mack, who practiced law for nine years before becoming a professional writer, would like IDENTITY CRISIS to be the first of a series of Sam McRae novels. And, if fan emails and Amazon reviews are any indication, readers would like this as well.
"I've written two other stories for the series and have plenty of other ideas for Sam McRae novels," she said.
Mack has also had short stories published in CHESAPEAKE CRIMES, a mystery anthology, and The Back Alley Webzine at http://BackAlleyWebzine.com, as well as one in CHESAPEAKE CRIMES: THEY HAD IT COMIN', to be released by Wildside Press in March 2010.
