The news that Katie Price got married so suddenly to cage fighter Alex Reid caused much debate in the red tops. And with the wedding came the obligatory glossy magazine spread. It’s not surprising that there has been some cynicism at the marriage. After Katie Price left one reality TV show – I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! she announced she had dumped Reid. And then when Reid won another reality TV show, Celebrity Big Brother, she announced she was going to marry him. But his money can’t be the motivating factor as Katie is one of the biggest earning celebrities. Her ring from her ex-husband Peter Andre cost £350,000 and was an ostentatious affair, but the ring from Reid is said to have cost just £2,200.
Of course when it comes to jewellery as a symbol of love, size and price doesn’t indicate how successful a relationship will be. In fact the bigger the bling factor, the more suspicious people may be that a relationship is not based on honesty. But there’s no question that giving jewellery as an expression of love is affecting. Rings are symbolic of the union of two people, their circularity representing eternity. And a beautiful pair of earrings, necklace or bracelet can show someone you believe they deserve to look and feel good.
Katie Price and Alex Reid married in Vegas and shopped till they dropped as the press snapped her new ring – a thick set platinum band encrusted with small diamonds. According to a source who spoke to the Daily Mirror, Katie has adopted a new approach to jewellery. Apparently Price didn’t want a showy ring but something practical and plain that she could always wear – even horse riding. The ring matches a $3,475 ring Price bought for Reid. Katie Price said in an interview that she wanted to keep her relationship with her new husband more private. Although the fact they both live their lives on various reality shows and have sold their story to OK! may raise a few eyebrows. While being filmed in Las Vegas she told the camera “I don’t feel I have to tell the press and media everything that I do.”
The simple Vegas wedding however is in stark contrast to the glittering and very pink wedding to Peter Andre. Whether Price will begin to opt for a more modest look to match her new wedding jewellery, or live a quieter life, remains to be seen.
