Statistically speaking, the Indianapolis Colts will go into the postseason with one of the NFL's most anemic running games. The team was ranked last overall at the end of the regular season.

Indianapolis ran for 1,294 yards this season, averaging 3.5 yards per rush and 80.9 yards per game. Running back Joseph Addai had 828 yards on 219 carries, a 3.8 yard average.

Yet, with the Colts having a bye week before the AFC divisional playoff game Jan. 16 at Lucas Oil Stadium, there isn't as much concern about the running game as there was a year ago.

Statistically, Indianapolis has struggled. But, as evidenced by Addai's 10 rushing touchdowns this season and the team's 16 rushing touchdowns overall, the Colts have had some success on the ground. They hope to build on that during the postseason.

"We've been primarily a pass first, run second offense this year. And I really expect that to continue," Addai said. "But I think that we will be able to run the ball when we need to. We're all healthy. I feel good going into the postseason. We've got Donald (Brown), Chad (Simpson) and Mike (Hart). We've all been able to make some things happen when we run the football.

"I feel as good, health-wise, going into the playoffs as I have since I've been with the Colts. So I think we're going to be able to run the ball when we need to."

Brown, the Colts' top draft pick last spring, missed several games with shoulder and chest injuries yet still ran for 281 yards and three touchdowns.

Simpson suffered a concussion in the team's next-to-last regular-season game with the New York Jets. He rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns on the season.

Hart, meanwhile, has gotten more playing time over the last month as he appears to have made a full recovery from knee surgery that sidelined him for the second half of his rookie year in 2008.

All three give Indianapolis more quality depth at running back than they had three years ago when the Colts used the combination of Addai and Dominic Rhodes to power the team's run to the Super Bowl XLI title. Whether that depth will translate to on-field success remains to be seen.

Indianapolis Colts coach Jim Caldwell seemed happy with the results of the team's first practice of the team's off week.

"It was a good practice (on Wednesday). It was a competitive practice. We did a lot of offense vs. defense kind of work. We had an opportunity to get a lot of speed work. We worked on our execution and timing. (Defensive ends) Dwight (Freeney) and Robert (Mathis) were out there," Caldwell said.

"We just want to get our groove going. Hopefully we can continue to do that the rest of the week. We don't look at this as a bye week. We look at it as a preparation week. That's important for us. We have a lot of work to do. We want to make certain we get that accomplished."

Since the Colts aren't sure who they will end up playing next week, the team is taking a long look at three teams—the Cincinnati Bengals, the New York Jets and the Baltimore Ravens. Indianapolis will face the lowest remaining seed after this weekend's AFC wildcard round games have been completed.

But before they actually do on-the-field work against any of those squads, Caldwell wants to shore up his own team first.

"We have three opponents we could possibly play. Rather than dilute your practice with just focusing in on a couple of teams not knowing who you ultimately will play, we would rather get some good work in and concentrate on ourselves. We'll do a little bit more individual work (this week). We'll work on our fundamentals and technique. Oftentimes, during the course of the season, as the regular season goes on, you scale back a bit on your individual work," he said.

"We could work on that (individual work) a little bit more at length and get back to those fundamentals. We also do a little bit more competitive drills with our offensive starters vs. our defensive starters. These starters-vs.-starters drills are not necessarily from a scheme standpoint or what we are going to face. We just want to work on our execution and timing. Those things, I think, benefit you in the long run. We take a couple of areas we feel we may have been weak in. We concentrate on those areas and focus in to try and get some of the problems solved this week as well."
