(North Carolina) According to NC Author, Adam Perkins, it’s time for an American History Month. Already there are several months that are celebrated each year in the United States to recognize the achievements of groups who have been historically under represented. Perkins says while he understands the nature of these celebrations, it’s time to move forward. “What we need now is a month that is inclusive of the contributions of all people regardless of race, color, religion, or sexual orientation. The only month that can do that is an American History Month.”
Perkins plans to take his request to the White House but admits it will take a country to make this a reality. “In order for this to happen, I am asking all Americans everywhere to please sign the petition and support financially as they are able. An American History month won’t solve all our problems but it will provide the best opportunity and platform to celebrate content of character and contributions made by all people. Besides, is asking people to come together too much to ask for?”
Perkins cautions that this not an attempt to dismantle current celebrations. “No one should think this is an attempt to combine everything under one umbrella. As nice as that would be, change takes time. But everyone should be mindful that all history in this country is American history. Perhaps one day, a more forgiving generation will emerge. At least, this will be the beginning of a process that hopefully will bring all of us closer as a Nation, a Country, as neighbors.”
Perkins explains that an American History Month will do wonders for our educational system. “It just makes good sense to foster an atmosphere of unity in our schools. I have spoken to students who resent being singled out during a month. At the same time, I have spoken to students who reported feelings of animosity because they felt excluded. The translation is that no one wants to be left out and no one wants to be singled out.”
In February 2009, Perkins travelled to Charleston, South Carolina for a segment on CBS affiliated station WCSC Channel 5. It was here that Perkins tested the waters when he asked the people of Charleston for their thoughts. “We took calls on the air and every person that called in agreed that it was time for change. In particular, they were in favor of a month that included everyone.”
A final poll revealed that over 70 percent of the people in Charleston were in favor of an American History Month. “I think the result speaks for itself and proves that people are willing to forgive an imperfect past for the sake of a more perfect future.”
