he Digital Pay TV market in Portugal is well divided. According to Dataxis Intelligence, there were 1,8 million digital pay tv subscribers in Q309 including 752.000 subscribed to Cable, 513.000 to Satellite and 538.000 to IPTV.
Zon Multimedia, formerly TV Cabo, is the leading pay tv operator with more than 60% of the market. It operates Cable TV service as well as Satellite TV service. IPTV is growing fast with Portugal Telecom, who registered a 13.5% growth in Q309. In addition, Vodafone has also launched its IPTV offer Casa TV in September 2009, which may become successful due to the partnership with Xbox 360 that could help to attract more subscribers.
The arrival of a Pay DTT service is delayed by the decision of the Portuguese regulator, ANACOM, to revoke the license of Portugal Telecom. PT was set to launch its Pay DTT services in July 2009 but failed to meet the deadline. The reason is that PT has developed its own Pay TV service on different platforms (FTTH, xDSL and DTH), and not on DTT in this period. The Free To Air license is not covered by this decision, with the aim to ensure the analog television switchover in 2012.
