When Staci Marquez-Nichols learned that her self-published ebook had earned a higher customer-recommendation ranking than a "real" book, she was excited and humbled. "Alicia Grosso's book has about 25 five-star ratings on Amazon.com,"
Staci was disappointed with what she calls "vague and ambiguous" instructions in Grosso's go-to industry reference. As both a freelance writer and the owner of Sustainable Soaps, Staci decided she could create a better product herself. She published "The Beginner's Guide to Soap Making" in 2008 and marketed it on Clickbank, eBookMall, and through soap supply companies like Symphony Scents.
EBookMall.com, a site selling over 300,000 electronic books, ranks its 100 best-sellers, top newcomers, best bargains, and top customer-recommended ebooks in each niche. Staci's "The Beginner's Guide to Soap Making" ranked #47 on eBookMall's "Top 100 Customer-Recommended"
"I think my ebook has done well in part because traditional publishers don't like to pay for full-color photographs. Grosso's book contains about 5 grainy, black-and-white images. To learn soap making, people want to see what things look like--what will the batch look like as it traces, what does lye look like, etc. My ebook has 1-2 quality pictures on each page," explains Staci. Because ebooks are transmitted online, it costs Staci nothing to fill her ebook full of those "worth-a-thousand-
Staci said that she was in the process of re-writing her ebook to expand and update it when she learned of the eBookMall ratings. The ratings motivated her to continue to deliver a high-quality, detailed product. Her new soap making ebook has 10 more pages of instruction and information, almost 80 pictures, and includes printable soap making "to do" checklists and soap recipe templates.
Staci, who was just involved in coordinating a soap donation campaign for the relief effort in Haiti, also added three additional ebooks to her product line: "The Problem with Commercial Soap," "The Complete Encyclopedia of Soap Making Oils," and "One-Pound Cold Process Soap Making Recipes." She also plans to keep adding to the list and creating an instructional soap making video. Her new relaunched soap making line is available at SoapMaking123.com.
"I'm very confident that my products are amongst the best out there to teach soap making," says Staci. She puts her money where her mouth is by providing comparison information on other soap making ebooks right on her website. Testimonials from her readers saying, "I love this ebook" and describing the process of reading it as "a religious experience" doesn't hurt either. With her go-getter attitude, soap making knowledge, and professional writing background, it's no wonder Staci's ebook has done well.
