Los Angeles, CA---Popous Pane and the Kids He Loves To Hate is a dynamic short film that has started a movement in the African American community that will last a lifetime.
Since the film's inception in 2009, Popous Pane has been critically acclaimed and successful within the national film festival circuit, and will be featured at The 18th Annual Pan-African Film Festival at Culver Plaza Theatres 9919 Washington Blvd in Los Angeles, CA on February 14th 2010 at 3:15pm, and February 17th 2010 at 10:15pm.
Popous Pane is a short film about two African-American brothers who are unaware of each others existence and have been living separate lives, until their father reveals a family secret and tells them about each other. The brothers, each remembering their father in a different way, develop a bond and agree to both confront the father that was not there for either one of them. The film is an honest and raw depiction of the current state of the Black family. It not only poses as a spotlight to the obstacles many Black families face, but also serves as an ode to the triumph of the many individuals who have emerged from fatherless homes as stable and successful adults who have gone on to become wonderful parents and break the chain of child abandonment.
Popous Pane has had successful screenings at Urbanworld, Chicago International and The Big Apple Film Festivals. The film was also featured as a top five HBO Finalist at the American Black Film Festival. It can be seen on HBO Zone on February 3rd & 14th at 10:45 p.m, and during the entire month February on HBO On Demand. Now with the film making its debut at The Pan-African Film Festival, even more people can begin to see the art that sparked the movement.
As a result of the positive response to Popous Pane, the production team has developed a community outreach program called "Being There." Being There is a dynamic, essential event, where the African-American community can have an open dialogue about the relationships or non relationships between Black men and their sons. By utilizing the groundbreaking short film Popous Pane, Being There opens doors to a guest panelist discussion and audience participation to discuss the important topics that the film addresses.
Being There has already been successful at community organizations throughout the New York City area. The next installment of Being There will be held at Gospel Uptown, an upscale social club in Harlem, NY on February 27th, 2010. This event will be a sophisticated gala event for men and women of the African-American community to participate in the Being There program and to raise money for local educational organizations that focus on the betterment of African-American youth. This event will boast a diverse panel of local celebrities and philanthropists who will offer their educated opinion on the state of the African-American family and Black fatherhood.
