Feb. 3, 2010 - PRLog -- What are pre-paid legal plans?
Prepaid legal plans are often described as legal insurance plans. The typical plan provides consumers with certain specific legal services at no cost, and reduced rates for other services in exchange for a membership fee, premium, or some other sort of prepayment.

Pre-paid legal plans make legal consultations much more accessible to the general publicThe basic service provided under most plans in generally legal advice and consultation by telephone and may also include:

Brief office consultations
Review of simple legal documents
Preparation of a simple will
Short letters written
Phone calls made by a lawyer to an adverse party.
Other plans offer more comprehensive coverage for trials, marital problems, bankruptcy, real estate matters and the like.

Most legal service plans in operation today rely on a panel of lawyers in private practice to provide covered services. This panel may consist of one lawyer or firm that services a small group under a direct contract or a nationwide network of law firms all of whom have signed a participation agreement with the plan administrator.

Why the pre-paid legal plans?
What if you had a lawyer you could call any time to get advice about any legal problem and you didn't have to worry about the cost. The attorney would draft your will, review it and update it for every other year, make phone calls, write letters on your behalf, negotiate your contracts and represent you in court. If you are traveling in another state and need any form of legal advice, he will refer you to a competent attorney in that state for no extra cost to you.

This all seems great on paper, but the mere thought of paying hundreds of dollars an hour to put an attorney on retainer is enough to persuade most people not to seek legal coverage.

You will be surprised to know that such coverage does indeed exist under an arrangement similar to your health or insurance plan. Pre-paid legal plans offer you access to all these legal services, for a monthly charge of $10 to $25. If you are employed, you may incur no charge if your employer provides legal services as a fringe benefit.

Pre-paid legal plans in USA
Over 85 million Americans belong to prepaid legal plans, most of whom are middle class people who would otherwise not seek the services of an attorney. Legal service plans help members prevent legal problems before they occur. A lawyer can review a document or contract before you sign it. Or you can consult with an attorney before suing a merchant or landlord.
