Susan Panico, Senior Director of PlayStation Network, spoke briefly with IGN about the company’s plans going forward with original video. She even hinted at the possibility of seeing content arrive on other distribution channels, such as television.
“For our longer term goals, we always looked at someone like HBO as an aspiration of a cable network that really became a content power house by providing quality shows they produced themselves,”
“For “The Tester,” we have a reverse indication model where it’s originating first on PlayStation Network and HOME, and then you’ll see the content distributed towards other channels later on that turns the traditional model on its head.”
Unlike Microsoft’s Xbox LIVE model, where users are required to pay a yearly subscription fee of $50 to gain access to services such as Netflix, Sony’s PlayStation Network is open to everyone free of charge. This allows the company to experiment with different types of programming and business models.
“We have some shows that there’s revenue generated through advertising or subscriptions, and we have other types of content that we distribute for free,” she said. “There are different types of business models that we look at depending on what our goals are. In some cases, it may be revenue generation, and in others it may be to broaden our audience.
