Architect Raymond Cekauskas Named 2010 President of American Institute of Architects Detroit

Several Metro Detroit Companies Also Represented on Board of Directors

The American Institute of Architects Detroit (AIA Detroit, www.aiadetroit.org) announced the election of Southfield, Mich., architect Raymond Cekauskas, AIA, LEEDAP, EDAC, as its 2010 president.

As AIA Detroit president, Cekauskas will focus on building membership value and public awareness about architecture through progressive programming and community outreach.

Other newly elected AIA Detroit Officers include Joseph C. Veryser, AIA, of Lawrence Technological University (Southfield) as vice president; Frank X. Arvan, AIA, of FX Architecture LLC (Royal Oak) as secretary; and Bert H. Koseck, AIA, LEED AP, of Neumann/Smith Architecture (Southfield) as treasurer.

“We are honored to have Ray as our AIA Detroit president for 2010,” said Rae Dumke, Hon. AIA, Executive Director of AIA Detroit. “As our city continues to work towards becoming more sustainable, we know that he will help advance our mission by promoting the value of good design and emphasizing the role architects have in our city.”

Cekauskas is a Principal at Harley Ellis Devereaux in Southfield, where his primary focus is the design of science laboratory facilities. He is the designer of the Wayne State University Chemistry Building expansion, which is currently under construction. His work has garnered honor awards through notable local projects such as the VA Research Building in Ann Arbor, Resurrection Chapel and Mausoleum in Clinton Township, and Troy Community Center. A 28-year veteran in the architecture profession, Cekauskas is an honors graduate of both Lawrence Institute of Technology and Washington University in St.Louis.  He also is active on numerous design juries.

Cekauskas has served AIA Detroit in many capacities, including roles as secretary (2008) and vice president (2009).  He also has been a member of AIA’s public awareness committee since 1999 and AIA Detroit’s membership committee and AIA Michigan’s design retreat committee since 2008.   Additionally, he has acted as an intern development advisor since 1995 and has been active at career day presentations at both the college and high school levels.

A veteran on the national speaking circuit, Cekauskas has lectured on a variety of topics ranging from Carbon Footprint Management to Strategies for Sustainable Laboratory Design.  He also has authored many articles, the most recent entitled, “The Science of Green” in the American School and University Magazine. Research interests include the creative downsizing of Detroit and the politics of global sustainability protocols.

Several members from AIA Detroit also serve on the AIA Michigan Board of Directors.  These include Mark Nickita, AIA of Archive Design Studio (Detroit); Cynthia K. Pozolo, AIA of Albert Kahn Associates Inc. (Detroit); Victor Saroki, FAIA, of Victor Saroki & Associates Architects PC (Birmingham); Benedetto Tiseo, AIA, of Tiseo Architects Inc. (Livonia); and Paul A. Stachowiak, AIA, of Integrated Design Solutions (Troy).

John A. Avdoulos, AIA, of HKS Architects PC (Northville); Dawn R. Peterson, AIA of Neumann/Smith Architecture (Southfield); and James F. Renaud, AIA of JFR Architects, P.C. (Sterling Heights) are AIA chapter directors.  

William Dunn, PA of Dunn Blue Reprographic Technologies (Clawson) is the Professional Affiliate Advisor.  Shelli R. Authier, Associate AIA, of Albert Kahn Associates Inc. (Detroit) is the Associate Director.
