Feb. 3, 2010 - PRLog -- Is your friend or loved one abusing drugs or alcohol?  Have you tried talking to them on your own with no success.  It's probably time for intervention.  An intervention is when a group of friends and family members confront an addict about their problem and attempt to persuade that person to go into treatment.  Here are the basic steps to performing a successful intervention.

Start by talking to the people closest to the addict about your  plans for intervention. The group you speak to should be people the addict cares about, close friends and family members. It is not a bad idea to speak with a professional interventionist as doing an intervention can be very stressful and depending on your situation it may be best handled by a professional.

Whether or not you choose to use a professional your group will need to meet and decide who is going to lead the intervention and exactly what things are going to be said to the addict.  Taking and preparing notes will help make the intervention much easier for everybody involved. You'll want to make sure that everyone is taking a caring approach and is not just condemning the addict.  You want the addict to understand that everyone really cares. An ultimatum will need to be presented in order to push the addict to agree to go into treatment.

It is imperative that you have a treatment facility chosen and an appointment made before doing the intervention.  If you wait even a few days you will give the addict an opportunity to back out and all of your hard work doing the intervention will be lost. Not sure what treatment center to contact?  One we recommend is The Ambrosia Treatment Centers. They are very nice and will recommend a rehab if their treatment center is not right for you.  You can call them at 866-616-0069, They don't charge anything for the call.

Once you've completed the intervention  the addict will have either admitted or denied their problem.  If they have admitted their problem then immediately help them pack a suitcase (the treatment center you have chosen will tell you what to bring) and take them to the  treatment center.
