By: Equilar, Inc.

Feb. 3, 2010 - PRLog -- Equilar, the market leader in executive compensation data and research, has published a report on top compensation consulting firms, their performance, and their engagements with the companies they service.

New SEC independence standards have made compensation consultants increasingly instrumental in devising solutions that comply with the revised statutes on disclosure. With political and media scrutiny on the rise, many companies are also engaging consultants to design tailored pay structures that competitively reward performance. Large mergers are consolidating market share in some industries, while smaller boutique shops are gaining ground in specific sectors and regions.

In its 2010 Consultant League Report, Equilar utilized the Consultant League Table module of its PeerInsight product to analyze annual reports and proxy filings of public companies, creating a picture of consulting firms’ market share nationwide. Researchers looked at financial metrics such as revenue, fiscal year-end market capitalization, net income, total assets, and one- and three-year total shareholder return to determine which firms had the largest and most profitable clients. Equilar also analyzed compensation consulting firms’ market share by sector, index, and location.

Below is a sample table from the report, detailing the market share of firms engaged by the Russell 3000:

1.   Towers Watson, 22.3%
2.   Frederic W. Cook & Co., 13.0%
