The multitude of manufacturing processes gives designers a wide variety of options when getting products made. The volume, complexity, physical requirements and cost are just some of the things that are considered when choosing between injection molding vs. dip molding.
Dip Molding shines when tight tolerances aren’t necessary, generally considered +/- 0.010 or greater. Dip Molding offers huge savings of 90% or more compared with standard injection mold tooling. Dip molding tooling can also be built quickly allowing production in a matter of days in some cases.
If close tolerance is needed, injection molding is the clear choice. Injection molding can hold tolerances of +/- 0.001 depending on design and resin selection. Injection molding also offers an almost infinite amount of material choices when blends and additives are considered. This allows the great flexibility in attaining the right combination of physic properties and cost.
Injection molding is one of the most popular processes for making complex shapes from thermoplastic resin. It is an excellent choice for a variety of applications, but dip molding should not be overlooked when tight tolerances aren’t necessary and the part does not need to be rigid. Dip molding offers tooling at a fraction of the costs of injection molding and can offer low piece part pricing. If your application calls for tight tolerances and
rigidity, injection molding will almost always be the best choice.
At Molded Devices Inc., our skilled production staff utilizes in-house automatic and manual systems to provide quality molding of vinyl Plastisol or PVC, with fast turn-around times assured. We use only the highest quality materials, including those, which meet MIL specifications and have FDA approval. A wide range of colors is available in finishes from high gloss to dull matte. All secondary operations are performed in-house including silk-screening, pad printing, hot stamping, assembly services, piercing, slitting, die cutting and packaging. We can provide custom shapes in any quantity. Our unique mold-making techniques allow us to tailor the molds to fit your needs.
From prototypes to low or high volume production runs, MDI delivers quality service at competitive prices.
