PRLog (Press Release) - Feb 02, 2010 -
Baltimore, MD - Mixed Martial Arts, or MMA, is a full contact sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques.  These techniques range from a mixture of martial arts traditions and non-traditions used in competitions.  These competitions offers martial artists of different backgrounds to compete following rules that allow the use of striking and grappling techniques, both while standing.

Mixed martial arts are traced back to various mixed style contests that took place throughout Europe, Japan and the Pacific Rim during the early 1900s.  With the founding of the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championships), modern MMA competition emerged in 1993.

Most ‘traditional’ mixed martial arts have a specific focus and these arts could be trained to improve in that area.  The most popular disciplines for each type include:

1.   Stand-up – Various forms of boxing, kickboxing and forms of full contact karate focus this discipline to improve footwork, kicking and other techniques.
2.   Clinch – Freestyle, Greco-Roman wrestling, Sambo and Judo are trained to improve takedowns, clinching and throws.  Muay Thai is trained to improve the striking aspect of the clinch.
3.   Ground – Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo and Sambo, among others, are trained to improve ground control and position.  This focus also helps achieve submission holds and defense.

Initially, mixed martial arts were practiced exclusively by competitive fighters.  However, the sport has become more mainstream and more widely taught and is has become accessible to a wider range of individuals of all ages.  This type of training is safe for anyone, at any age and with varying levels of competitiveness.

Mixed martial arts in Baltimore offer a facility and trainers that will enable any student to be successful in their development of skills.  The key to a successful result of mixed martial arts training is to find the right trainer and maintain a consistent workout schedule.
