Many people assume that the world of beauty pageants is more closely linked to the modelling world than they actually are.
Superficially, the two worlds seem quite similar. Both hunts for the best: hair, skin and physique – all must be in peak condition if you’re serious about a career in modelling or winning a beauty contest, and that’s just a standard requirement. Sublime beauty is always in fashion, but the world of high-fashion in particular has very exacting standards. What it likes from one year to the next changes constantly. The very formal approach to beauty adopted by pageant culture is often at odds with what is happening in fashion, and where fashion leads, modelling (http://www.modelsconnect.net/Become-a-model/fashion-model...)  must follow.
However, it is not entirely a one-way street. Beauty contests can offer a number of skills that are of some worth in the modelling business.
Good posture is an essential in any pageant, and knowing how to showcase an outfit is an invaluable tool, especially for models just starting out. Mastering the basics of posture provides an excellent grounding: the art of avant-garde posing comes later.
Contests can also help build confidence. Learning to hold the attention of a panel of judges is something that can easily translate to castings. Learning how to project confidence is half the battle won in securing any job. Also knowing how to deal with the possibility of rejection is something that would make a new model in demand. Someone who doesn’t crumple at the first sign of defeat is someone who will eventually succeed.
But the word ‘pageant’ itself conjures up a world of formality. The way a contestant would be expected to walk and pose is directly opposed to the expectations of the fashion world. The individuality required to formulate a good walk would mean breaking years of pageant training and starting from scratch. This added investment in a new model could be a deal-breaker for many agencies (http://www.modelsconnect.net/modelling_agencies/model_age...).
Finally, just a little research into the backgrounds of the best models working today shows that you will be hard pushed to find a working model with previous pageant experience. If modelling is what you’re really serious about, this may give you your definitive answer.
