Not the relocation of our group of animals, not the labored flashbacks to Alex the lion’s childhood, and not even the penguins succeeded in getting Amit Kotler in gear in “Madascar 2”.

Three years ago the four stars of the New York Zoo escaped from their cages. Alex the Lion (voiced by Ben Stiller), Marty the Zebra (Chris Rock), Melman the Giraffe (David Schwimmer) and the fair but full Gloria the Hippopotamus (Jedda Pinkett-Smith). Without any planning and without knowing if life in nature would be better than their spoiled existence behind bars, the four landed on the island of Madagascar, and the rest is history.

193 million dollars and three years later they return in “Madagascar 2”.  But unfortunately, the savannahs of Africa where our gang lands after an unenviable flight are far more boring than that tropic isle.

It begins parched but promising. The pampered animals who have already become accustomed to life outside of the zoo, land after a terrible flight in what is supposed to be their natural habitat, the open expanses of the savannah. But the problems begin here: at the end of the movie’s 89 minutes you understand that the meager collection of jokes that the film makers have gathered for “Madagascar 2” were all used up in the few minutes of the trailer.

OUT OF AFRICA

And in spite of this, here are some of the developments. The movie’s star this time, a little more than the others, is Alex the Lion, discovers his lost family in what appears to be a scene that was left on the cutting room floor of “The Lion King”. In a manner supremely coerced by the boring storyline, Alex flashes back to his childhood, when he was snatched away in a box by the evil men and sent to the zoo in New York. He finds out that there are other animals who look just like him, that he is not one of a kind, and that the status of King of Beasts can’t be bought with dancing and smiles to human spectators, but rather with an endless string of survival tests in the jungle of life.

This meeting of detached animals and their lost brothers on the savannah provides what is supposed to be the height of the plot. Just like Alex, Gloria and Marty find themselves to be less unique and special in their new environs, as does Melman the giraffe (in love with Gloria) who stays behind when Gloria finds a real hippo’s hippo to spend her time with. Unfortunately, none of these subplots succeeds in creating any especially sweeping incidents.

Without totally sacrificing the movie’s plot, it can be said that Melman’s ignoble station cannot be ignored. As a result of a dam that the evil men have built, the drinking water runs out and the animals dehydrate and die, but in a horrifying manner for a movie whose target audience is mainly (and primarily) children, there is someone who tells Melman that he should throw himself into the mouth of an active volcano for the benefit of all the rest.

THE PRESENCE OF ABSENCE

But as with all family entertainment movies, it’s still all’s well that ends well. Everyone forgets that the poor giraffe has almost been murdered on water’s altar, and the semi tragic plot closes in a more positive than predicted mood. If this isn’t enough, another problem greater that an uneventful plot is the lack of supporting characters and the feeling that when they do appear, they don’t fulfill their roles.

It wouldn’t hurt if the funny penguins, who appeared to be the movies saviors at the beginning, but left their patched-up plane for a few more fun but silly dunks in the water. The same can be said of the lemurs, the jokers of the first “Madagascar”, who this time suffice with only a very small guest appearance, as if someone had refused to pay them enough for a more substantial role, Truthfully, maybe someone really didn’t agree to pay the Lemur king, none other than Sasha Baron-Cohen, for a bigger role.

Regrettably, even the widely publicized visit of “Madagascar 2”’s stars to Israel didn’t improve the condition of the movie. These poor people, who doubtfully will be back for another trip to Africa or wherever it may be next time, did their work well. The labor of dubbing, upon which you can unfortunately not build an entire movie, has been produced here in the finest fashion, but it appears that someone forgot to develop the plot that could carry the movie. It would be good if they would take a look at a bit of “Bolt” made by their competitors from Disney, and find out how to succeed beyond all expectations.
