WHITE PLAINS, NY (Feb. 1, 2010)— Care Management Technologies, Inc. (CMT) of White Plains, New York and Ameritox®, a pioneer in Pain Medication Monitoring Solutions, of Baltimore, Maryland have formed a business partnership to bring a combined solution to the growing problems associated with the over prescribing and misuse of prescription pain medications.

CMT’s claims data analytics and proprietary Quality Indicators™ (clinical algorithms), provides population-based analytics platform, that identifies specific cases in which individuals are at risk because of potential opioid overuse and that could benefit from Ameritox’s state-of-the-art urine drug screening methods. “This is a very cost-effective way for insurers and employers to quickly evaluate large populations and then pinpoint potential misuse and recommend screening for those specific circumstances in which a patient safety or quality issue may exist,” says Joe O’Hara, CMT’s Chief Operating Officer.

A recent study published in Population Health Management revealed that the majority of patients using opioids for chronic pain were unlikely to be taking their medicine in a manner consistent with their prescribed regimen and suggested urine drug screening as a solution to identify inappropriate use.

The study, Inappropriate Drug Use in the Chronic Pain Population, tracked over 900,000 urine toxicology tests performed on more than 500,000 patients who were prescribed chronic opioid therapy. The findings showed that nearly 75% of patients may not be taking their medications as prescribed.   “We believe that the combined program with CMT will bring additional value and a return on investment to the insurance and employer market while helping to reduce the adverse effects caused by opioid overuse,” explained Ameritox’s Chief Medical Officer, Harry L. Leider, M.D.

Dr. Leider has worked with national experts in the area of chronic pain to design programs and tools that support practicing physicians, and designed and implemented programs that help payors improve quality of care for patients with chronic pain.
