ICNet’s SSI module is a web-based intranet application which has been designed to automate collection of patient data from surgery, laboratory and patient administration systems. The core data provides details of the operations, procedures and infections for a patient during any period of care.
The alerts, reports, statistics and analytical tools provided by this system assist in optimal delivery of care, mandatory reporting and auditing of surgical procedures. The custom data collection feature allows for the association of SSI information to individual patients on a central infection control record. This in turn ensures that all the relevant data is collated, formatted and distributed to the relevant bodies in a timely fashion.
Surgical site infections have been shown to be the cause of up to 20% of all healthcare-associated infections, affecting at least 5% of patients undergoing a surgical procedure. Many surgical site infections are caused by contamination of an incision with microorganisms from the patient’s own body during surgery and the majority of surgical site infections are preventable.
Surgical site infections can have a significant effect on quality of life for the patient and are associated with considerable morbidity and a prolonged stay in hospital. The majority of surgical site infections are preventable and measures can be taken in the pre-, intra- and postoperative phases of care to reduce risk of infection. The SSI module is a complement to ICNet, a web-enabled application that helps hospitals reduce medication costs through more expeditious and appropriate use of real-time microbiology diagnostic data management, surveillance and reporting. The use of the software can assist in decreasing the risk of spreading preventable infections through timelier root cause analysis once a problem has been identified.
