Band merchandise a decade ago
Band merchandise has seen a lot in the last decade. About eight years ago if a local band wanted to buy personalized band merchandise than they would have to know someone very high up in the industry. Some smaller local bands would make the break, but even then the t-shirts and other items available to customize were priced so high that it wasn’t affordable. Of course, bands signed by a bigger label had no issue finding options for their merchandise table, nor was there a price issue. So, on one side of the table were smaller local bands with great music but no connections or distribution methods. On the other side were bigger bands and labels, with many different methods of distribution and options. There was a big gap, but within a couple years everything was about to change.
Online website began making their second coming. Sites like MySpace launched in 2003 and within a couple years were a great home for bands. MySpace doesn’t have too much with band merchandise but it has everything to do with music marketing, which is part of the mix. MySpace made many people feel more comfortable online, giving light to many online custom shops. Yet, even with the emerging options there still wasn’t anything affordable.
Band Merchandise Today and Customized Wristbands
Fast forward to 2010 and you have many inexpensive, widely available options for your merch table. The item in the spotlight is personalized wristbands. There are two main kinds: cotton embroidered wristbands and silicone wristbands. With both being low cost products, there is a lot of potential for your band to make a profit. Bands all over the nation have begun to get unique in their efforts to make different styled merchandise. Some bands made rubber wristbands 3 times the size they normally are to give them a huge, but at the same time cool look. It’s also important to note that with wristbands there is no sizing issue. Whereas with all these other promotional products, for example t shirts, it’s important to make sure everyone is happy. Small, Medium, Large, and XL don’t exist in the wristband world. Since the item on the merch table will be priced low and fit everyone, it will be an easy choice for many people attending a concert.
The future of selling merchandise at the local and national level
With a range of online websites now available to customize products musicians will have no problem finding something within budget. As the story goes above, the whole music industry changed drastically on every front over the last ten years. One doesn’t have to be a big shot to launch a marketing campaign or sell merchandise. Everything has become much more accessible and of lower cost. Where will the industry be in 2020? Only time
can tell.
