Britain may have just emerged from a recession, but Knowsley Safari Park have just announced their highest visitor figures for more than 35 years.
Over 530,000 people came through the Merseyside park’s gates in 2009, up by 7000 on the previous year, and the best annual figures since the first full year the park was open for business in 1972.
General Manager David Ross said: “Throughout 2009 we had to cope with very mixed weather, including the forecast ‘barbeque summer’ that turned out to be a monsoon most of the time.
“When you also take into account all the economic doom and gloom that’s been around, plus high fuel prices, it was a real achievement to see visitor figures rise to a level that we haven’t seen for the best part of four decades.”
A number of attractions proved popular with visitors to Knowsley Safari Park this year, including the park’s largest ever pride of lions, three white rhino ‘toddlers’
With the recent news that the UK has officially recovered from the recession, Ross is optimistic about the park’s 2010 prospects. He said: “We’re one of the region’s few all-day attractions, because of the size of the park, the large number of animals we have, and the many new features we’ve added over the years.
“This means that we offer excellent value for money, which is why I’m confident we will continue to attract large numbers of visitors old and new this year, especially if we get anything like a decent summer.”
