LINCOLN, CALIFORNIA, January 28, 2010- Some of the Great Masters of Western art used the camera obscura and the camera lucida to help them draw and paint with photographic accuracy. These seemingly magical devices projected or reflected an image, which looked like a full color moving picture of the subject, on to a canvas. Then by drawing around the image a lifelike drawing or painting could be made. Today, LUCID-Art (a small emerging business owned and operated by the creator of the LUCID-Art, Les cookson) has reinvented one of these classic drawing aids: the LUCID-Art camera lucida; making the lost techniques of the Old Masters available to everyone and easier to use than ever before.
When one looks down the view hole of a camera lucida, that person will see a transparent “ghost” image of the landscape, object or person he or she is drawing reflected over their canvas. The person draws over the image, and like a mime trapped in an invisible box only the person using the device sees the image his or her hand is drawing around. The result is a perfectly proportioned sketch with correct perspective—
The catch has been that a camera lucida’s image was hard to see, small and unstable, and if a camera lucida could be found it was either very expensive or an over priced plastic toy. “I spent years finding solutions to the problems with the traditional camera lucida” said Les Cookson the creator of the LUCID-Art camera lucida “and the LUCID-Art really solves them all.” The LUCID-Art retains the magic and history of the camera lucida, and Mr. Cookson found a way to make the image bright and easy to see, larger and more stable, while keeping the cost down and not sacrificing quality.
The LUCID-Art camera lucida will soon be popping up at art supply stores and is now available worldwide on the web at www.AncientMagicArtTools.com. Come take a closer look and watch their demonstration video and see the magic of the past alive in the twenty-first century.
