"1.21 Gigawatts? Great Scott!" In Back to the Future, Dr Emmett Brown is ah-struck by the amount of electricity it will take to power the flux capacitor and send Marty McFly back to 1984. But what is really amazing is how much electricity we use today to power our electronics, and we don't even get to time travel. If you can't harness the lightning with a flux capacitor, how about the sun?

Solar Power in Demand?
In the US, market demand for solar power has risen on average 30% per year for the last fifteen years. In 2007, the US solar market increased 57%. The United States is the fourth largest market for solar power behind Germany, Spain, and Japan.

Worldwide Energy Usage
Efforts worldwide to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase energy security are in trouble if nothing is done to stop energy consumption by both information and communication technologies and consumer electronics. This warning came in a report published in Paris by the International Energy Agency. The study warns that energy used by computers and consumer electronics will not only double by 2022, but increase threefold by 2030. "It would also cost households around the world USD 200 billion in electricity bills and require the addition of approximately 280 Gigawatts (GW) of new generating capacity between now and 2030," he added. The report is called "Gadgets and Gigawatts: Policies for Energy Efficient Electronics."

Computer & Electronic Electricity Usage
Computers, related equipment and consumer electronics are responsible for close to 15 percent of total residential electricity consumption, a share similar to that of other major appliance categories. However, they add, the growth has been faster, about 7 percent per year since 1990. Retail sales of electricity to the residential sector totaled 1.3 trillion kilowatthours (kWh) in 2003 and increased use of electricity accounts for 68 percent of the projected increase in residential delivered energy use between 2003 and 2025.

Google's Solar Panel Project
Google has a unique way of saving energy and using solar power, don’t they always? "We're committed to helping to build a clean energy future. As our business grows, we want to make sure we minimize our impact on the Earth's climate. So we’re taking every step we can to implement innovative and responsible environmental practices across our company to reduce our carbon footprint, ensure efficient computing and help our employees be green." In June 2007, Google completed a 1.6MW solar installation at our Mountain View, CA headquarters - the largest U.S. corporate installation at that time. Google installed 9,212 solar panels on top of eight buildings and two solar carports at the Googleplex. This installation produces enough electricity to power 30% of Google's peak electricity at the Mountain View, CA headquarters.
