We have all seen the images coming out of Haiti – they are truly heartbreaking!
The country’s infrastructure is slowly being rebuilt and food, water and medical supplies are starting to reach their destinations. Most of the survivors of the earthquake lost everything – literally everything; some survived with only the clothes on their backs!
As the Haitian people move from ‘survival’
mode to ‘sustaining’
mode they will need everything as they try to rebuild their lives. Nikol Gianopoulos, the owner of Sewtropolis, believes that when a person receives a handmade gift they are not only receiving the gift, but a little bit of love from the person who made it. As the Haitians rebuild their lives how comforting would it be for them to receive a piece of love in the form of a shirt, pants, skirt or tote bag. This is why Nikol decided to host a “Sewing for Haiti” day Feb 13 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Sewtropolis, 5 West Diamond Lake Road in South Minneapolis. Nikol says “We have given monetarily, we have prayed and now it’s time to give of our talents.”
Sewtropolis is a sewing studio and fabric store located in South Minneapolis. Sewtropolis is the result of a long time dream of Nikol’s to keep the art of sewing alive. Sewtropolis is equipped with sewing machines and cutting tables and is the perfect place to hold the Sewing for Haiti event.
Nikol is also seeking donations of fabric and notions so dig out your stashes and bring them to Sewtropolis between now and Feb 13. Nikol is also seeking donations to off-set the cost of shipping the boxes directly to Project Eden’s team members in Haiti (theprojectden.org)
. Project Eden team members in Haiti have indicated there is a need for everything! So bring your sewing machine or use one of Sewtropolis';
come for the day or come for a few hours; make one item or make many. The people of Haiti could use all the love we can provide.
