The “Saints go to Super Bowl” our organization brings your attention to this great city and how much devastation still remains. As you travel to the Super Bowl consider doing an assignment on the reality that New Orleans still has a lot of work to be done, see our story below:
The Louisiana Conference of the United Methodist Conference Disaster Response, Inc., plans to finish our rebuilding efforts in New Orleans by the end of 2010.
Although much national attention has been focused on rebuilding by personalities like Brad Pitt and Oprah, our organization has remained out of the national press. Now is your chance, while reporting on the game we could really use some assistance and recognition now that our great city is back and the SAINTS are going to the Super Bowl.
Four years after hurricane Katrina and there are still FEMA trailers as well as blue tarps on houses that haven’t been touched by work and lives that are destroyed because they were uninsured or underinsured.
The Louisiana Methodist Disaster Response Ministry funded by UMCOR and other agencies is using Case Management to accomplish their mission of identifying homeowners that need help. We purchase materials with the private grant money and use volunteers to rebuild and repair these homes. Since 2004, we have used 70,220 volunteer hours to rebuild homes in New Orleans.
There is still much work to be done; many more volunteers are needed to help these forgotten victims of the hurricanes. Please help while the national spotlight is again on the city of New Orleans, we need to get our story in front of the public so that we can recruit volunteers to come and help rebuild New Orleans.
