Mills College Student Receives Scholarship To Study In Egypt

Jan. 28, 2010 - PRLog -- Nicole Beckerman, a junior at Mills College has been awarded The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) Scholar Abroad Scholarship for the spring 2009 semester.
Beckerman, a native of Seattle, WA, will spend four months in Cairo, Egypt studying Middle Eastern international relations.

Beckerman selected Cairo as her destination because of the unique position Egypt holds on the world stage.

“For an International Relations major, there is no place better to study abroad than Cairo,” said Beckerman. “This is a city situated at the heart of complicated Arab regional politics, with professors and resources on campus that are beyond compare in terms of their value to a student of political science seeking to understand the Middle East”

Because the study abroad experience is so important to the growth and development of college students, NSCS awards The Scholar Abroad Scholarship to one outstanding NSCS member each semester to assist with the funding of his or her semester abroad.

“We’re pleased to help Nicole pursue a study abroad experience in Cairo,” said Stephen E. Loflin, Executive Director and Founder of NSCS. “Her desire to expand her knowledge within her major and better understand Middle Eastern politics truly made her application stand out. We are proud to help her represent her school, community, NSCS and the United States overseas.”

Scholar Abroad applicants are required to answer four essay questions, provide at least one letter of recommendation and must be accepted into a study abroad program at the time of application. Applications are reviewed by the NSCS Scholarship Review Committee, which is based in the organization’s national office in Washington, D.C.
